Background and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting ready to film the last scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Love Again", the vocalist got a telephone phone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her last moments of Phase Four cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to come across Durham, merely she arrived ten minutes afterward her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "You've gotta do what Sonja would want you to do", so she returned to the ready. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga's loss but Gaga was determined about finishing the scene, so she stepped on the set up and sang "I'll Never Love Once more". The vocalizer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to [the] prepare, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very aforementioned day inside an 60 minutes."[1]

Along with the film version, the soundtrack likewise contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the vocal with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[ii] [3] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The vocal is performed in the key of Thousand major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in common time. Information technology follows a chord progression of 1000add2–Em7–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and 1000add2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/Eastward–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga'due south vocals bridge from Gthree to Efive.[5] Brian Truitt of USA Today described the song as a "weepy" ballad.[half dozen]

In his moving picture review, Ty Burr of The Boston Earth said Gaga's "climactic memorial" operation of the song "will leave you a soggy mess whether you similar it or not".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.[15] USA Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Dearest Once again,' the film's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her ain Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about honey and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It'south a transcendent achievement that could single-handedly cyberspace the singer-turned-actress her get-go Oscar, reminding us yet once more that she's one of the best vocalists right at present in whatever genre, popular or otherwise."[xvi]
