Wave Count montage
Hear a 44 minute wave-inspired montage past Wire contributors Wayne Marshall and Stefan Helmreich drawing on 70 pieces of music composed between 1830–2018
Building from MIT professor of anthropology Stefan Helmreich's research into body of water science and pop culture representations of waves, he and technomusicologist Wayne Marshall have carefully crafted this ballsy montage of music composed between 1830–2018, all of which aims to "evoke waves via various compositional strategies and styles". These styles include classical, romantic, modernist, electronic and experimental, also as surf rock, reggae and bossa nova, to proper name some.
The pair have arranged the music into rough chronological and thematic sections, outlined in the tracklist below. In add-on to the textual tracklist, Helmreich and Marshall take also made a video version of the montage, which includes visual cues as each track enters the mix, while besides illustrating when certain pieces overlap.
